The Best 5 OS features from WWDC23

WWDC23 Logo

Looking back at WWDC23, there has already been a lot of talk about Apple Vision Pro and VisionOS and rightly so. It’s Apple’s latest and greatest (with a price tag to match), But I want to look at the best OS (in my opinion) across iOS 17, WatchOS 9 and iPadOS.

So which features am I referring to here:

  1. Journal App
  2. Standby Display
  3. Name Drop
  4. Mindfulness App
  5. Health App on the iPad

There are plenty more, but let’s take a bit more of a look at what we know about each of the features from what was presented at WWDC.

Journal App

This is one that a lot of people will be excited about. The app will use on-device machine learning and create personalised suggestions for your journal entry. The suggestion will be based on your recent activities, such as photos, places and workouts.

You will also be able to schedule notifications to add a journal entry to help build out that journalling habit. The app can also be locked and has end-to-end encryption so that only you can see your journal entry.

StandBy Display

This is not a new concept for Apple Watch users, and we now have it for the iPhone. This provides a full-screen view of glanceable information, which can be viewed when your phone is on its side and charging.

You can also personalise your display with different clocks types, photos and widgets. I am looking forward to this as it will be perfect on my bedside table on my MagSafe charger, providing me with a bedside clock.

NameDrop

NameDrop is effectively an extension of the already popular AirDrop feature. This new feature will allow iPhone and Apple Watch Users to share contact information by bringing their device together.

You can also share content, SharePlay or watch a movie while close to other iPhones.

Mindfulness App

I love that Mental Health is coming to the Apple Watch with WatchOS10 In the shape of the Mindfulness App. Within the Mindfulness App, you will be able to log your emotion and daily mood. Using the Digital Crown, you can scroll through a number of shapes that indicate how you are feeling and what is impacting them.

To see the insights from what you have captured, you can go into the health app on your iPhone or iPad.

Health App on the iPad

We are finally going to see the Health App on the iPad as well as your iPhone. The design is specifically optimised for the iPad providing a new look for how you see your data. You will be able to see your data in detailed interactive charts.

As well as the above, you will also have the ability to capture your Medication, Cycle tracking as well as being able to log your mood and emotions.

Conclusion

Now this is just a very quick sound bit of some of the features across the iOS17, WatchOS10 and iPadOS17. For me, these were the ones that piqued my interest, and there are still many more features that I need to dig into a bit, but for now; these are my top 5.
